The Sassafras twins are on to a new adventure in the Amazon Rainforest where they encounter sloths, hummingbirds, blue morpho butterflies, poison dart frogs and toucans. We use our SCIAT Logbook, as seen below, to document our findings on each of these animals!
While I read some of our other living books on the rainforest, such as, "The Great Kapok Tree," by Lynne Cherry and "The Umbrella," by Jan Brett, my daughter has a chance to color the rainforest scene from above, from National Geographic Kids. | "Geography From A to Z," by Jack Knowlton is a wonderful book to help kids learn about the landforms and habitats of our world. I use it as a reference for so much more than geography. |
The book "Usborne Stories From Around the World," has dozens of stories from every part of the world. We read "How Birds got Bright Feathers," a story from South America that takes place in a rainforest and shows how being too greedy can take away something beautiful from everyone, even yourself.
Animal Phonics Readers from Scholastic has a series of short readers for beginners. The "Sleepy Sloth" focuses on the sl sound and has a fun and educational short story to share with your emerging reader.
The Layers of the Rainforest poster was found at learncreatelove.com and has been the perfect simple illustration to explain the layers of the rainforest to a five-year-old.

My daughter is obsessed with face paint and butterflies, so what better time to mix the two, than when we are studying the blue morpho butterfly! | The project that was the most fun in this study, was recreating the rainforest layers and adding the creatures we are studying to the correct layer. We used an old file folder and different colored construction paper and added in printed pictures of animals and flowers. We did happen to have a couple of rubber frogs that we added for fun. |
